I love this card for SO many reasons but I call it a powerhouse card for a reason.
- DOUBLE DIP! 4x American Express Membership Rewards® Points on U.S. supermarkets (up to $50,000 per calendar year, then 1x thereafter) AND will be the card you link to Rakuten!
- This bank does enforce “family language,” meaning you cannot earn a welcome bonus on a card in a teir lower than the one you already earned- so this option is usually my recommended entry point to this bank!

2. Connect powerhouse card to Rakuten

➡️ Place your grocery order on INSTACART through Rakuten – this is part that really ups your earning!
- Instacart codes as “supermarket” so you earn 4x American Express Membership Rewards® Points on those grocery purchases, EVEN if it’s Target or Costco
- General stores like Target, Walmart, Costco, Sams etc never code as supermarkets themselves- this is why I loveeee placing all our grocery orders via Instacart (not to mention the HOURS it saves me)
- Instacart pretty regularly offers 2x points back on Rakuten…BOOM 6x points in all!
***Pro tip! Again SMARTER NOT HARDER- Install the Rakuten browser extension so you are prompted to activate your Rakuten extra earnings every time you visit the Instacart website!
4. Watch the points roll in!
I loveeeee this strategy for one of our largest recurring expenses week over week. Let’s recap!
- Make sure to have this American Express® Gold Card
- Connect this card to Rakuten to earn American Express Membership Rewards® Points instead of cash back
- Go to Rakuten (or make sure the browser extension is installed)
- Click Instacart and place a U.S. supermarket order via Instacart
- Make sure THE American Express® Gold Card is ALSO your payment option for Instacart
- Watch the 6x points roll in for allllll that grocery $$ you’re going to spend anyway!
It’s only halfway through the year, and we have earned probably just under 50,000 of these flexible points via the food we have to buy monthly anyway!! That’s a whole welcome bonus- 2 flights to Europe, maybe 3 flights to Hawaii, or 1 business class flight!
